Glee, Castle, and Dollhouse
Oct. 22nd, 2009 03:40 pmThis week's episode of Glee was...fine. I disliked the storyline with Sue Sylvester. However, her line to Will at the end was fantastic. The storyline with Emma annoyed me. The kids' storyline was...in a fantasyland, but not actively offensive. And I don't think that anyone in high school would actually call themselves or their actions "cool."
Dollhouse is on shaky ground. It's skipping the month of November and having double-feature episodes in December. Without a ratings miracle, it's apparently toast. I will not be surprised if it happens. Nor will I be over-sad if it happens. The parts of the story that I care about - the premise, the fate of the Dollhouse, the ethical questions, the larger world, the fate of Topher and Dr. Saunders and everyone - has not been (nor will it be) the ones that the show is going to focus on. Which makes me sad, because I think that it is the strongest parts of the show. I love the banter, I love Enver's acting. I'm tired of the repetitive "Echo is special, let us show you how!"-ness of each episode. I've got it, let's move on.
By contrast, I'm obviously elated that Castle is doing well. Heat Wave is on the NYT Bestseller list. I think that has a lot to do with the show getting a full season. It's still problematic concerning race, but I love the show enough that it doesn't matter to me. Which doesn't make me the best ally...but it makes me a better viewer. I'm still able to figure out the killer or the twist pretty close to the beginning, but the way the writers tell the story is fun enough that I don't care. I think the show is fantastic, and would recommend it to anyone who might be interested.
The only two shows I watch weekly are Project Runway and Fullmetal Alchemist. Both are fantastic.
