Yeah, I think it's supposed to be a good idea to wear gloves when dealing with most hot peppers.
As long as you don't touch the seeds/innards of the pepper, I think it's okay not to, as long as you vigorously wash your hands immediately afterwards. And don't touch any part of your body.
Like I said, the first time, I was real careful, and didn't touch the insides, and was fine.
