Annoyances
May. 4th, 2007 01:02 pm1st, and most recent: Bringing a book out to the breakroom, and having someone try to have a conversation with me anyway. Even when I continue to read the book.
2nd: Not being able to swear. I'm starting a new session at an acquaintance's house, and his house rules are no drinking, no smoking, and no swearing. Two out of three - no problem! The last one....shit.
At the present time the system is I try to watch my language, but if I slip up either I apologize or he glares at me until I apologize. The latter only happens if I don't realize that I've uttered a curse word.
The problem is that the younger the group is, and the more males there are, the more likely I am to swear. And this is a fuckin' DnD group! (Although, to be fair, of the 8 people there last night, two were female, and one more will be joining us next week.)
I ultimately took to emitting "swearword" very monotone whenever I felt like swearing, but that doesn't help my outbursts of swearing.
He allows things like "drat" and "goodness" but not "oh god!" or anything else. I've already pointed out that they're just substitutes for the real thing, but he doesn't care. I neglected to mention that I don't care about taking his lord's name in vain. We've had political conversations (very interesting ones) but I don't want to start a fight. Besides - his house, his rules.
So...I need help coming up with words to substitute into my vocabulary. Frak is the obvious choice, but I want to expand it. I don't want to take too many swear words/phrases from the same fandoms so that I don't look like too big of a geek. Or that I seem like a well rounded geek. You get the idea.
I would say "Great Maker" but it seems a little unnatural.
So what are fun swear words/phrases which are unlikely to cause offense?

on 2007-05-04 05:29 pm (UTC)There are other Red Dwarf "profanities" but smeg is the best, and most oft-used.

on 2007-05-04 06:29 pm (UTC)I think I'm going to stick away from the more traditional "drat" and "darns" just because I feel like I'm babying up my language (no offense meant to your adorable baby). I'll try smeg, but that means that I'll actually have to watch more than half and episode of Red Dwarf. That's probably good for my geek culture.
Speaking of babies, I have recently discovered that it is possible to have an ugly baby. And it is also impossible to say that. Especially to someone you work with. But I can honestly say that Dorothy is teh adorable!!!
