Overdone tropes
Jun. 11th, 2009 09:59 pmI'd be writing my list of reasons why I am very frustrated when I read Heinlen, but I don't have long enough to rant. I'm going out to play pool in ten minutes. That'll come tomorrow. Quick preview: why hello there sexism!
For now,
octopedingenue and I were talking a few weeks ago about certain tropes common to sci-fi/fantasy which are mindblowing the first time you saw them but are dull the next million times you see them. In a word, over-used. The one we discussed was the "They're all actually X!!!!" Where X=robots/aliens/orangutans/pig-faced/insert crazy idea here. Seriously. Overused.
I would like to add to the list with the "Having a dream with the characters from your life which will make you realize something about your life". Seriously. Can we stop using that now. Actually, dreams in generally are off limits unless a character can canonically influence them or they are completely nonsensical and barely helpful. I think at least half of my webcomics use that trope - or just insert the characters into LOTR in a dream sequence.
Please, stop. It's cool the first few times. It's not cool anymore. Funny-once, okay guys?
