Jun. 15th, 2006 04:22 pmWell, I finished Death Note. Took about three days, but I got all the way through the entire second arc to the end. And you know, it took a little while to care at all about Mello and Near, but after a few chapters, I really liked both them and their storyline.
First - what is up with all these people making good DN icons? I've been looking for good B5 icons for months now, and nothing. Ten seconds of looking for DN, and Boom!
Just as Light says, no one's as good as L, and I found the "by our powers combined" bit a tad silly, but its true. Neither of them could outwit Light, and Light definitely got L in the end, but together they did defeat him. I think it was Light trying to manage too much at once. His attention was split, and since he couldn't directly control Mikumi, he lost.
That's really Light's strongest point - being able to manipulate people, control them, and make them think what he wants. He understands how to do it individually, and how to do it on a large scale, but its that inbetween point that tripped him up - too many individuals at once.
Also, I have a personal theory of Matsuda being gay for Light. Really truly, would have been a house-wife for him. Here's my train of thought: obviously Matsuda was Light's little bitch until the end...just like Misa, just like Takada, just like every girl he's ever flirted with. Also, Matsuda repeated everything Light said, again, just like Misa and Takada, who often acted as parrots for his ideas. The scan I read had...one of the detectives...say to Matsuda in the final chapter "you really liked Light, didn't you?"..or something to that effect. Also, Matsuda totally was hitting on his co-worker at the end, asking him to go out for drinks, and the guy saying "what, again?" There are undertones there. Undertones!
Also, the whole scene between Matsuda and Light in the end: "I thought you were the only one that understood me!"
Matsuda is so gay for Light. And then (maybe) gay in general.
Light's downfall and death was perfect. The denial. The maniacal laughter. The monologuing. The attempts to still win. The pleas. The panic. The death. Perfect.
There is no heaven or hell...there is only oblivion. Better, more poignant and frightening than Light becoming a shinigami, or going to hell. Everyone that he killed...he's going to experience the same as them. He gets no more or no less than them. And all that he accomplished was ridding the world of a few people. They will never be truly judged, because there is nothing to judge them. Very nicely done. Ryuk was fantastic.
Also, I don't care what anyone says, that was Misa in the last panel. And how the hell did she survive so long? I saw her being killed off in like 4 chapters, and yet she survived when almost everyone else died.
And Mikumi (minus the last freak-out at the end) was gorgeous. Creepy creepy creepy (pitiable and insane) and gorgeous.
Once, towards the end, when Mello and Near are trying to trap Light into proving that he's Kira, I surprised myself. Near said something like "if this person dies at this time, I'll know that L is Kira" - and the next time I saw Light I thought "Don't kill that person! You'll reveal yourself!" The second I finished that second I thought: What the fuck? You're not rooting for Kira!? You know he's going to fail, and you know that he should fail. You're horrified at his actions...what's wrong with you?
I still haven't fully justified it to myself. I guess I'm just impressed by the sheer cleverness and brilliance of Light, and I sometimes forget that he's a psychopath. He's one of the worst I've ever seen depicted. He's killed thousands of people, thinks of people only as a means to an end, manipulates and despises everyone, has a god complex, started murdering because he was bored, and still, somehow, part of me likes him. I think that is the brilliance of Death Note.

I think you mean "
Also, I have a personal theory of Matsuda being gay for Light.
I don't know how popular Light/Matsuda is anywhere, but apparently L/Matsuda is fairly popular in the Japanese fandom. Also, somebody posted a Matsuda/Light's dad doujinshi in one of the comms awhile back. I think they were merpeople at one point. It was a very weird doujinshi. Anyway, I don't think I've ever seen a Matsuda/anyone fanfic in English. Not one, even with Sayu, or with Ide, which by the way? All through 108 I was like, "oh, look, Matsuda/Ide is finally canon."
It's funny you should say that, though, because when Light confessed in 104, and then spewed rhetoric in 105, people were like "IT'S OKAY, MATSUDA IS STILL ON LIGHT'S SIDE. HE WAS SAD WHEN LIGHT CONFESSED. ALSO IF MATSUDA LETS LIGHT BE ARRESTED AND GET THE DEATH PENALTY, LIGHT WILL NEVER GIVE HIS BLESSING TO HIM AND SAYU." (who, by the way, I'm pretty sure is still catatonic at the end.) Then 106 happened, and here's what people said:
"...UMMM.
I THINK THAT WAS A TYPO.
...WAIT I KNOW. MISA WILL SAVE HIM."
I laughed a lot. Anyway, let's talk about Ryuk for a second. Hot damn, I love Ryuk. He is my second favorite character and oh my god was he ever having a good time at the end there. Now let's talk about the very end. LAME. I disagree that it is Misa, and will argue until I'm blue in the face that it is L and Light's mpreg lovechild. Possibly I will be blue in the face because you will be strangling me in frustration, which I will deserve richly. Even so.
And Mikami (minus the last freak-out at the end) was gorgeous.
You're not kidding about the thing at the end. I was all, "what happened to his face?"
Don't worry about having to justify rooting for Light, as long as you don't actually believe in what he does and start acting creepy like all those TOWNL forum weirdos. That's what happens when the protagonist is the bad guy. It's such a simple, yet effective way to give the story depth.

on 2006-06-16 12:17 pm (UTC)I've seen the arguments for the L/Light lovechild. I'm not convinced. But I'm more likely to believe its their lovechild than Sayu, which is a theory that I've totally seen!
Also, what's up with her being catatonic? The hell?
AH! Another argument for Matsuda/Light infatuation - he keeps commenting on Light's lovelife. He's obsessed with it. Also, he keeps talking about how pretty certain girls are - only girls associated with Light!
So. Gay. For. Light.
Oh, and did people think that Light would actually survive? What's wrong with them? He's psycho! And sometime in the beginning of the second arc, there's a very strong implication that his precious reign never happens ... something like... "The world was heading towards Kira's dark reign"...or something like that.
Icons - I don't know who all. I just went to a icon LJ and all of them were good. ALL of them! I had never seen so many good icons in a row before.
Back to Light/Matsuda. I probably wouldn't read much of it, because it relies on Matsuda being an idiot (which he is, but lovable), and I don't think I'd enjoy it. I'm good with the canon I have, honestly.
What do the TOWNL forum weirdos do?
I have noticed that when I've read a shitload of DN in a row, I'm more likely to try to be (not nec. nice) snarky and clever. It's kinda weird.
Also, I finally read the FMA 60, and I like Kimblee and Gran, and it's freaking me out. Like, a lot. Kimblee's speech - so good! Sounds just like what Mustang said to Edward, except the adult version.
I want to go back to hating them now.
