The things that caught my attention the most were: Dr. Marcoh destroyed Envy, Hohenheim is a Philosopher's stone, the homunculi and "Father", their creator/master who also turned Hohenheim into a Philosopher's stone as thanks for giving him life, started Amestris and started various horribly bloody conflicts throughout its history so that they could make a transmutation ring of Amestris to make a Philosopher's stone plus something else that hasn't been said yet, Selim Bradley (King Bradley's adorable son?) is the homunculus known as Pride and is the oldest of all of them, Trisha knew about her husband's condition and loved him anyway, and Hohenheim has just declared war on "Father" and mostly healed Sensei of most of her wounds. Also, Father was the one that came up with Amestris's alchemy, which is different from Xing's (neighboring country, was taught alchemy by Hohenheim) in that he controls it, shuts it off at will, and probably sacrifices lives every time it is used. The cute little girl from Xing is creeped out by Amestris, and so that is the speculation - plus Father has tubes coming out from him.
Scar killed Winry's parents, and she decided to bear that but not to forgive him, so she helped him escape and tried to heal a wound of his. Scar's also decided to help the Elric brothers for the time being, although they still want to give him a pounding. Al's armor is starting to reject him, Yoki is with Scar and is actually being useful, Kimblee is a freakin' sociopath (even more so than in the anime) and Winry finds him charming, the Elric brothers have gotten several of the chimera under Central's control to help them BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST THAT AWESOME!
Also Armstrong's older sister is just about as awesome as Hawkeye, who is especially awesome as she calmly took the revelation of Selim being Pride and managed to call a few of his bluffs and then was easily able to pass on the info to Roy via code. Also Roy would be a total ladies' man if it wasn't for the fact that he only uses the ladies for information. Also, Hawkeye's grandfather makes a pretty convincing woman when he crossdresses.
I should've put that more coherently, but I hadn't planned on saying so much. Also I have no idea what you last knew. Basically - every good character rocks my socks off and they're all starting to work together, the evil character's plots are slowly being revealed, and boy are they evil, and Hohenheim has just chosen the side of good rather than the side of "I'll just get the fuck out of here and save my own life". He's way cooler than he was in the anime.
Oh, I forgot about Hohenheim and Izumi. Aww. I should go back and reread; I just got evilhippo to catch up on the past year, and she flailed about it too. Aaaand I'm also getting R into it (she e-mailed me to tell me how she was liking Death Note and FMA, and prefaced with "FMA OMG SO GOOD", which I think is a positive sign), so now everybody except me is going to have all this stuff fresh in their minds.
