Sozin's Comet
Jul. 19th, 2008 09:58 pmShort version: Good. I couldn't understand what was being said some of the time, and that was my primary frustration. Spoilers ahead.
I like Zuko/Mai more than I like Katara/Aang. I felt very proud of Aang in coming up with that alternate solution, which was still justice and wise and cruel. I'm very proud of Zuko - and I'm glad that he asked about his mother at the end, otherwise I would have felt that they completely dropped that storyline.
Azula's meltdown was tragic. I felt for the character, and the music that accompanied the Agni Kai heightened that. Azula does know how to fight better than Zuko though - she always picks the best targets.
I like the pairing of Katara and Zuko - they work well as a team, and I feel that they balance each other out well, especially since they're both the "adults in the family. I wished we could have seen more of Epic!Katara fighting. But this wasn't about her - it was about Zuko and Aang reclaiming their destiny, just like it has been from the beginning. I enjoyed the imagery of the Fire Lord and the Avatar addressing the people - it really brought to mind the flashbacks to Sozin and Ruko.
Toph, Suki, and Sokka were all solid. Especially Suki every time she saved the day. And Toph when she was the MelonLord. And Sokka, when he brought down an entire fleet of ships with just his cunning.
I wished I could have understood what the turtle-lion was saying. I really have almost no clue as to what any of his lines were, and there were several more said by other characters that completely mystified me. Did anyone else have that problem?
Even though no one died, I don't feel like the show held back. The fates of both the villains was...harsh. And self-inflicted.
I am saddened that it is over. It was a well done show, and I look forward to rewatching it and remembering all that I had forgotten. And figuring out what many of the lines were in the last episode. I wish we could have more (ignoring the movies for now), but at the same time I feel satisfied. I suppose I will simply have to read more fanfiction.
EDIT: OH GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT THE LEAGUE OF OLD PEOPLE AKA THE ORDER OF THE WHITE LOTUS. Which was the best payoff ever, by the way. They kicked ass like nobody's business. This show has been one of the best (along with B5) for planning ahead and dropping hints and having continuity.
